Flowers For Algernon

I believe that Charlie should not have taken part in the experiment in the book, Flowers for Algernon. He should have remained in his original state where he was happy and well liked.

Throughout the book, I felt sorry for Charlie. Originally, he was mentally retarded and worked at Mr. Donner’s Bakery. He thought that the people who worked at the bakery were his friends. It is sad that even these people who knew him well, really only liked him because he was good for a laugh and easy to prank.

After the surgery, Charlie’s intelligence began to increase. This was good for him as he felt better about himself and felt smart; especially after beating Algernon in multiple races.

I think that it is unfortunate that Charlie became so intelligent. The experiment would have been better for Charlie if his intelligence only reached that of the average human. Instead, he went from being an outcast because he was mentally retarded to being an outcast because he was too intelligent.

I think that the only good thing about Charlie becoming so intelligent is that he was able to finish his paper on the Algernon-Gordon Effect. He might feel that he really did accomplish something major in his short time of intelligence and will be a part of history.

I think that Charlie shouldn’t have been a part of this experiment as the end results were much worse than his original state. I believe that Miss Kinnian and the professors are partially to blame for this as there hadn’t been enough tests performed and they should have been looking out for Charlie’s well being. It is too bad the experiment hadn’t worked out properly and Charlie could have lived a happy, normal life.

  1. I disagree.
I think the experiment was good for Charlie. He got to experience his dream, to be smarter. he got to experience love, and he may have helped make the experiment better in the future. Also, after he lost his intelligence, people who were so cruel to him before had a new respect for him because they finally understood how hard it was for him.

  2. I agree with you last paragraph. I think they should have waited longer to see how Algernon progressed. If they had waited longer and had seen how Algernon turned out, maybe they could have made some changes before Charlie had the operation.

  3. I totally agree with you on how the could have left charlie alone and he would have been much happier. i totally think it is the professors and miss kinnians fault charlie had to go to the mental asylum. Yes charlie did do a good job of the Algernon-Gordon effect.

  4. I think it is a well thought out post in which you have strong thoughts. Whether Charlie stayed smart or not, or whether they should've experimented on him or not, it doesn't matter. I believe that science will never reach the point where they can raise one's I.Q. efficiently.
